A new synthesis method, discovered by researchers at the University of Leicester, has resulted in the discovery of fluorescent silicon nanoparticles. The discovery may ultimately result in a new process to help track the uptake of drugs by the body’s cells.
“The benign nature of silicon also makes the nanoparticles useful as fluorescent markers for tagging biologically sensitive materials. The light from a single nanoparticle can be readily detected,” according to a University of Leicester press release
